Notable roster cuts:
Aaron Green, Running back – This is only going to get tougher as the preseason moves along. Green has already looked like a back worth keeping. The problem? Chase Reynolds doesn’t get cut and he happens to be the best special teams player on the Rams. Not playing last week hurt him but Green figures to play versus the Denver Broncos this week in what could be one of his last chances to impress.
Brian Quick, Wide receiver – Still don’t see him making the roster. The emergence of guys like Nelson Spruce and hopefully Duke Williams will be too much for Quick to overcome. Even more notable head coach Jeff Fisher called him out in a press conference saying that he needs to catch the ball. Quick is playing his last two games in a Rams uniform unless he really comes out and gives them a reason to keep him.
Mike Thomas, Wide receiver – Thomas had a couple of drops week one of the preseason and as of right now Nelson Spruce and Paul McRoberts have poured on some pressure for the 6th round pick out of Southern Miss. Thomas didn’t do much to help his cause in week two. Spruce has been more noteworthy but McRoberts has been logging some serious snaps in game. We will see if Thomas can bounce back, if not he could be looking at practice squad stint at best.
Isaiah Battle, Offensive tackle – I had Darrell Williams here last week but he looked solid in-game and Battle didn’t play. To make matters worse Battle ended up being carted off this week and at this point we won’t know what to make of it. Bottom line is Battle does not have a guaranteed roster spot. He needs to play and show that he belongs this week. Time is running out for the supplemental draft pick.
Andrew Donnal, Offensive tackle – Nothing has changed from last week. I think the versatility with Rodger Saffold being able to play right tackle if need be could make Donnal expendable.
Ian Seau, Defensive End – Seau has done nothing but impress and he looks like he is going to be the toughest cut of them all. He recorded one sack week one versus the Cowboys and almost had another then he looked good getting pressure on the Chiefs quarterbacks in week two. Seau would probably make most NFL rosters but the Rams are pretty clogged on the line. He still has plenty of time to show off what he can do.
Josh Forrest, Linebacker – It’s him or Bryce Hager… I am picking Hager now even though I had Forrest last week. Hager led the team in tackles in week one and really looked sharp. Another linebacker that really impressed was Cory Littleton last week versus the Chiefs. He was flying all over the field and Forrest seems to really have his work cut out for him.
Mike Jordan, Cornerback – He was on the roster last week but then Troy Hill and Cory Littleton happened. Jordan looks good but his problem is that he is playing with the last string and that’s not helping him. Hill and Littleton got on the field early and showed off in tougher competition. Hill logged some second team reps in practice the other day. Jordan could make the roster but I don’t see the Rams keeping six cornerbacks.
Coty Sensabaugh, Cornerback – Surprised? Well don’t be! I truly think Sensabaugh could miss this team. His contract was stupid to begin with but it wasn’t designed in which releasing him would have a crippling effect on the cap. Sensabaugh has looked like the same cornerback we saw in Tennessee. We know his connection to Gregg Williams but he has done nothing to secure any spot on this team and if Troy Hill and Mike Jordan continue to play well in preseason it will force the Rams hand in cutting Sensabaugh.
Potential 10-man practice squad:
RB Aaron Green – TCU
WR Mike Thomas – Southern Mississippi
WR Paul McRoberts – Southeast Missouri State
TE Benson Browne – NC State
OT Isaiah Battle – Clemson
DL Zach Colvin – Bowling Green
DL Morgan Fox – Colorado State-Pueblo
DE Ian Seau – Nevada
LB Josh Forrest – Kentucky
S Jabriel Washington – Alabama
