Los Angeles Rams 53-man Roster Prediction: Post Sony Michel Trade Edition

The Los Angeles Rams are two-third done with the preseason. After less than stellar outings from Xavier Jones and Jake Funk and an injury to Darrell Henderson, the Rams have traded for Sony Michel. The team dropped down to 80 players on Tuesday before needing to get down to 53 before Week 1. While there is still a lot of time for guys to make players, we’re nearing the end of the offseason. It’s now or never for fringe roster guys to make a statement.

Now, let’s take a look at my projected 53 man roster prediction post the new Sony Michel trade which certainly shakes things up.

Previous 53-man roster predictions

Quarterback (3)

Matthew Stafford
John Wolford
Bryce Perkins

After his performance against the Las Vegas Raiders, Bryce Perkins has made it very difficult for the Rams to cut him. If they were to cut him, he would very likely get claimed by another team and possibly even in the NFC West. Perkins went 26/39 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. With Wolford being a free agent after the season, they’ll have a backup in the waiting.

Running Back (3)

Sony Michel
Darrell Henderson
Jake Funk
Xavier Jones – Practice Squad

The Los Angeles Rams traded for running back Sony Michel from the New England Patriots. With that being the case, I don’t think that the Rams would keep four running backs on the roster. Jones hasn’t shown a lot in the preseason. Funk meanwhile has shown some flashes. Jones should make the practice squad in case they need him due to an injury.

Tight End (4)

Tyler Higbee
Brycen Hopkins
Johnny Mundt
Jacob Harris

No changes here, but keep an eye on Brycen Hopkins. The Rams have seemed to convert him to a blocking tight end. However, if the team needs to open up a roster spot elsewhere, I don’t believe his spot is guaranteed.

Wide Receiver (6)

Robert Woods
Cooper Kupp
Van Jefferson

Desean Jackson
TuTu Atwell

Trishton Jackson
Ben Skowronek – Injured Reserve
JJ Koski – Practice Squad
Jeremiah Haydel – Practice squad.

No changes here this week. Trishton Jackson did suffer an injury that held him out last week. That led to JJ Koski leading the team in receiving yards. Koski has earned a spot on the practice squad if he gets there. Haydel didn’t do anything in the second preseason game. His spot might change for me next week. However, with Raymond Calais getting injured and cut, Haydel gives the Rams some return depth.

Offensive Line (9)

Andrew Whitworth
Joseph Noteboom
Tremayne Anchrum
David Edwards
Brian Allen
Coleman Shelton

Austin Corbett
Bobby Evans
Rob Havenstein

Jordan Meredith – Practice Squad
Alaric Jackson – Practice Squad
Chandler Brewer – Practice Squad

Again, another position with no real changes. Although keep an eye on Bobby Evans. I would be shocked, but not surprised if the Los Angeles Rams cut him. He started the offseason as the starting right guard and is now a backup playing in the preseason. He also hasn’t looked good in those games. The Rams like what they have in Chandler Brewer. It’s possible that Brewer makes it over Evans.

Defensive Line (5)

Aaron Donald
A’Shawn Robinson
Sebastian Joseph-Day
Greg Gaines
Bobby Brown III
Jonah Williams – Practice Squad
Michael Hoecht – Practice Squad

Again, no changes here. I think that the Rams like what they have on the defensive line and like who they could keep and develop on the practice squad. Bobby Brown III had an excellent game against the Raiders and could contribute as a rookie.

EDGE (6)

Leonard Floyd
Justin Hollins
Ogbonnia Okoronkwo
Earnest Brown IV
Justin Lawler
Chris Garrett
Terrell Lewis – Injured Reserve

In previous editions I had Chris Garrett making the practice squad. As a division II prospect, it was thought that he might need time to get experience against tougher competition. However, Garrett has done nothin but played well through two games against NFL level completion. If the Los Angeles Rams try to get him on the practice squad, he might not make it there.

Linebacker (4)

Kenny Young
Troy Reeder
Ernest Jones
Travin Howard
Jake Gervase – Practice Squad
Christian Rozeboom – Practice Squad

After not playing in the first preseason game, Kiser played through then third quarter of Week 2. While that may not mean a lot, none of the other starters played that long into the game. Maybe Kiser just needed the reps, but he has enough game experience to not need to be out there. It’s a situation to keep an eye on, especially if the Rams keep three quarterbacks.

Cornerback (5)

Jalen Ramsey
Darious Williams
Robert Rochell
David Long
Dont’e Deayon
Kareem Orr – Practice Squad
Brontae Harris – Practice Squad

I didn’t have Deayon making my roster last week with the thought process that he was a guy that should have been out there playing and he wasn’t. Deayon didn’t play for a second straight week, indicating that his spot on the roster is safe. The Rams will keep five cornerbacks and have good depth.

Safety (5)

Jordan Fuller
Terrell Burgess
Taylor Rapp
Nick Scott
JR Reed
Troy Warner – Practice Squad
JuJu Hughes – Practice Squad

In this edition I have flipped JR Reed and JuJu Hughes. JR Reed has played very well in two preseason games and has earned a spot on the roster.

Special Teams (3)

Corey Bojorquez
Matt Gay
Matthew Orzech

The Los Angeles Rams will likely try to trade Johnny Hekker. However, if they can’t it wouldn’t be shocking to see them cut Hekker. Bojorquez has not been cut yet which means that this might just be a legit competition at punter. Bojorquez is the cheaper option and has one of the stronger legs in the NFL.

I believe this adds up to 54. I’ll cut Triston Jackson to get you there.
