The Los Angeles Rams were told some devastating news on Tuesday morning. Running back Cam Akers tore his Achilles tendon and will be out for the 2021 season. While the team has Darrell Henderson, there was some speculation that the team could look to sign a free agent running back.
However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams don’t have any plans to make any calls to free agents at this time.
Rams don't have any immediate plans to pursue a free-agent running back. They believe in Darrell Henderson, like last year's undrafted free agent RB Xavier Jones and also drafted RB Jake Funk in the seventh round this year. For now, they're standing pat, but could revisit later. https://t.co/kkIVXrySFq

This is interesting considering who the Los Angeles Rams have behind Henderson. The Rams have undrafted free agent Xavier Jones and seventh round pick Jake Funk. Jones doesn’t have a lot of experience and Funk lacks the burst and speed required from running backs in the NFL.
Henderson hasn’t shown the ability to carry the load over a full season. He only had one game last year with over 20 carries. He’s also shown a tendency to get hurt with ankle injuries in each of the last two seasons.
The Los Angeles Rams might not be looking to sign a running back in the immediate future. However, don’t be surprised if they look to sign one in the early parts of the season. They could also keep an eye on players that other teams cut as they get closer to the final 53-man roster.
With Henderson, the Los Angeles Rams are in good shape at running back. However, there’s a lot of optimism and trust being put into guys like Jones and Funk. In one sense you like to see that confidence. In another sense, you have to hope that it pays off.
