The Los Angeles Rams are in search for a new quarterback. According to ESPN’s Senior NFL reporter, Jeremy Fowler, Matthew Stafford considers the Rams a viable contender in his trade market with the Lions. While it’s unclear what the Rams can do with Jared Goff’s long-term deal on the books, they’ve explored the possibilities with Stafford.

It is evident that Jared Goff’s future with the Rams is in doubt. After the Green Bay Packers game, head coach Sean McVay said that everything was being evaluated. He also said that that Goff was the quarterback, “right now”. Meanwhile, general manager Les Snead said that Goff was the Rams quarterback, “at the moment”. He also called his future a, “beautiful mystery.”
Stafford is just one of a few trade options for the Rams at quarterback. The team has been connected to DeShaun Watson as well. If the Rams are unable to trade Goff, Plan B is to have an open quarterback competition with John Wolford who started two games at the end of the season.
The connection to Stafford makes sense. The Rams’ former Director of College Scouting, Brad Holmes, is the new Lions general manager. Therefore, there is a relationship and connection to Les Snead.
The Detroit Lions signal caller is 32 and threw for 4,000 yards last season with 26 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. He threw only five interceptions in 2019. Stafford has led the Lions to the playoffs three times in his 12 year career, most recently in 2016. The Lions’ 11-5 record in 2014 tied for their most wins in franchise history and most since 1962.
The San Francisco 49ers are connected to Stafford as well. They have reportedly offered two second round picks and two third round picks. This report also doesn’t make it clear if the Rams and Lions are close on a trade. However, what is clear in this report is that the Rams are exploring their options. This is a team that isn’t happy with the level of play that they are getting from the quarterback position and understand that they are in a window to win now with players like Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey in their primes.
Goff has turned the ball over 38 times over the past two seasons. That number is near the top of the league. His performances against the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and San Francisco 49ers were a large reason why the Rams were fighting for a wild card spot on the final day of the season instead of home field advantage and the NFC’s top-seed.
It’s going to be a long offseason full of rumors and reports and the quarterback position. Matthew Stafford is only the latest. Stay tuned at Downtown Rams as we get more information.
