Senior Bowl Practices Day 1

Mobile, Alabama home of the Reese’s Senior Bowl. This is my second year at this storied event and I’m excited to bring y’all a recap of day 1.

The South team was the first team to take the field, coached by the Cincinnati Bengals. This practice was the more entertaining of the two. A lot of eyes were on the QB group as the team is headlined by Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts. Herbert had a solid day but did not have many opportunities to make a standout throw. Jalen struggled today, his placement was inconsistent, and his arm looked weak in comparison to Herbert and Steven Montez. Montez was the biggest surprise for me. Montez is a player that has all the tools, he has a strong arm and is athletic enough to extend the play, but his accuracy is spotty.

Biggest Winners South Team:

  • Devin Duvernay , WR , Texas

Duvernay was cooking today. Duvernay was dropping his hips in his cuts and exploding out of turns. Every db lined up against him had their work cut out for them.

  • Van Jefferson, WR, Florida

Jefferson put on a show with his route running and footwork.

The North Teams practice was a lot slower. Most of the time was spent stretching and on special teams drills. The qb group is headlined with Jordan Love, and the other two on the roster are Anthony Gordon and Shea Patterson. Love was by far the standout of the group. His arm was much stronger than the other two. Patterson was surprising like Montez and had a good day. Anthony Gordon was the least exciting of the group as some of his throws looked labored.

Biggest Winners North Team:

  • KJ Hill, WR, Ohio State

Today might as well be renamed KJ Hill day because he worked every db he was lined up against.

  • James Proche, WR, SMU

James Proche is another receiver that ran crisp routes and displayed great body control for a smaller receiver.

I didn’t have a chance to watch every player on the field today, but there were other standouts. Those include:

  • Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina
  • Marlon Davidson, DL, Auburn
  • Kyle Dugger, S, Lenoir Rhyne
  • AJ Green, CB, Oklahoma State
  • Matt Hennessy, IOL, Temple

All in all the first day of practices at the Senior Bowl were a little slow. I’m sure there will be more intensity tomorrow and I will have even more content for y’all!
