It’s been a whirlwind this week at the Rams’ facility with the team moving on from both Wade Phillips and John Fassel.
Head coach Sean McVay is wasting no time at all in trying to find the proper replacements for both coaches. Ian Rapoport is reporting that Sean McVay will be meeting with linebackers and assistant head coach Joe Barry about the defensive coordinator position today:
Make no mistake, Barry has done a nice job developing linebacker talent during his time with the Rams but his track record as a defensive coordinator is not ideal. Our friend Blaine Grisak over at Pro Football Network had this to say about a potential Joe Barry Rams defensive coordinator tenure:
To add onto what Blaine said, this doesn’t make any sense to move on from Wade Phillips for Joe Barry. If you are moving away from Wade, it has to be for a younger up-and-coming coach such as Aubrey Pleasant.
Barry is being linked to the USC defensive coordinator job and could very well end up there. It’s not safe to say this is a done deal by any stretch. McVay is simply interviewing Barry for the job. Not every interview has been reported or will be reported. McVay is doing his due diligence and I expect him to interview Pleasant as well as other candidates.
If this is indeed the hire and the Rams hand Barry the keys, McVay clearly liked something about the way he carried himself during his three seasons with the Rams. It’s also worth mentioning, Barry was the assistant head coach and was in charge of much more than just coaching the linebacker position. Maybe more than we thought and maybe it was enough to push him into prime position for the role of defensive coordinator.
