After an exciting opener to start the season, the Rams received some unfortunate news about their elite return man and one of their special teams aces.
According to Head coach Sean McVay, the Rams will lose WR’s Pharoh Cooper and Mike Thomas for a few weeks. Cooper appears to have suffered an ankle injury that is serious enough to require surgery. Thomas also left the game against the Raiders and will miss time as well. This leaves the Rams now with only four healthy wideouts on the roster but luckily the team does have two at their disposal via the practice squad.
UDFA WR’s KhaDarel Hodge out of Prairie View A&M and Steven Mitchell Jr. out of USC are ready to get called up from the practice squad. There is a good chance only one will and that will likely be whichever one shows the most promise on special teams. With Cooper and Thomas out, this also means the Rams will be looking for a returner. There is a chance Cooper Kupp and rookie John Kelly could be fine doing it but the Rams could also go back to their preseason camp returners JoJo Natson from this preseason and potentially even Shakeir Ryan from last preseason, who currently plays in the CFL. One name that has no connection to the Rams but could make sense is former Kansas City Chiefs RB Akeem Hunt who finished in the top five in kick returning last season.
It’s unsure what can be made out of all of this. If the Rams are looking for returners, they will have options inside and outside of the building, if they are looking for legit receivers they also will options inside and outside the building and of course, if they are looking for special teams contributors there will be options inside and outside the building. To even move further, former Ram Bradley Marquez who was a special teams star for the team was just recently waived to make room for the recently claimed Ram Jamil Demby. Marquez knows Coach Fassel and would be a nice fit if that is what the Rams are looking to do.
