In the NFL things happen that are out of a team’s control. With that being said something out of the L.A. Rams control was a torn ACL to their rookie safety Brian Randolph.
Randolph will be back to compete next year as he was waived with an injured designation and will be placed on injured reserve. The Rams just signed former Saint and Wisconsin Badger safety Michael Caputo to take Randolph’s spot.
Caputo is a guy who has been considered a durable leader as NFL.com puts it. He totaled 244 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, one and a half sacks, three interceptions, 17 pass breakups, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries over his college career. Caputo was also named captain for the 2015 season as a red-shirt senior. The former Badger is not the fastest player (he ran a 4.62 second forty time) but he excels in run support and also flashes ball skills for the next level. Here is his scouting report for the NFL.com’s draft profile of Caputo.
Three-year starter and considered one of the toughest guys on the team. Well respected leader who works with young players. Quick to recognize play-action and respond. Shows ball skills and aggressiveness at the catch point. Posted 17 passes defended over last two seasons. Comes downhill in run support looking for action. Takes solid angles to the ball and consistently gathers his feet before striking. Willing to play with pain.
Eyeballs the route from two-deep coverage and misses out on hints from quarterback’s eyes. Too slow to stick with man coverage. Always looking to chop down legs as a tackler rather than wrapping up driving through the hit. Ends up with too many arm tackle attempts. Had surgery in 2012 for a protruding disc in his spinal cord, and suffered a concussion against Alabama and had to leave the game.”
Overall, it really is disappointing to see a player like Randolph miss out on competition. This season especially the Rams are looking for a replacement free safety for their former safety who left in free agency Rodney McLeod. It looks as though Maurice Alexander the fourth-round pick is the favorite. Certain guys like Rohan Gaines, Jabriel Washington, Jordan Lomax, Jordan Kovacs need to step up for spots on the roster. Now with Caputo competing this could be interested this seems like a guy who could really get the coaches to like him early on which could get him a spot on the practice squad but maybe even the 53-man.
For now we will have to watch closely in the preseason, the good part of this is having Hard Knocks to look forward too after the games are over.
